New Day - Chapter Ten

" New applicants, and their side of the story."

By

His Royal Majesty, King Gwalchmai ap Iorwerth

With the following trouble makers:)

Baron Harrison Prichard
Lord of Harrowfield (neighbouring estate to Morin)
Brother of Lady Aislinn Prichard-Morgance

Baroness Ashleigh Hopevale-Prichard
Lady of Harrowfield
Wife of Lord Harrison

and

Lord Kenith Prichard
Eldest Son and heir to Lord Harrison Prichard

*************
The journey had been long and hard. They had set out as soon as they had
learned of Lord Kendall Morgance had been killed and that his daughter had
continued to the captial as per her dying fathers wishes. They knew why.
once she put in her claim... no one would be able to claim the Morgance
land. And without Raelin in their grasp they would loose the lands they had
coveted since Lady Aislinn had married Morgance.

Baron Harrison Prichard, his lady wife Barroness Ashleigh Prichard and their
eldest Son and heir Kenith Prichard rode into the capital Alban early one
morning from their manor in the south of the city. They had arrived late
the night before and knew that Morgance's daughter had probably already seen
the king, and they wanted to put their words forward. The witch must not be
allowed to win the lands of her father.

Kenith had been the one who had suggested getting rid of Kendall Morgance,
in the hope that Raelin would return to Morin where they could take her and
her lands safely without the king noticing any commotion. But the litle
wretch had been one step a head of them and had not come back and without
her they could not claim the lands and now they needed to plead their case
to the King.

Harrison had tried to have her assisnated but that had failed as well.. some
dumb knight had gotten in the way.

Now dressed in their best clothes the Prichard's rode into the Caer and
asked if the king could see them on such short notice. It was a long shot.
But they had to try to convince him that Raelin was a dangerous person.. one
who dabbled in majics without thoughts of the consequences and who had
'murdered' Lady Aislinn Morgance, her stepmother.

They waited in a small corridor to see if the king would speak to them.

"I am so sorry." The servant said. "The King has just returned from his
Honeymoon and he is taking a little time to get back into things. He can
see you this afternoon however if you don't mind waiting."

What the servant didn't tell them was that the king would use the time to
get to know more about them.

The Lord nodded and the family moved off to wait until the king was able to
see them. There was no use in demanding the King pay attention. After all it
was his grace that they depended on for sucess.
hours later a servant came back.

"if you will follow me, the King will see you know." He led them to the
throne room, where Hawk was seated on his throne. this was the room he used
when he wanted to impress people, and to meet people he did not
particularly want to see.

They followed the Servant into the throne room and as the men bowed the lady
curtseyed. "Your majesty, thank you for taking the time to speak to us."
Baron Prichard said.

"my lords, my lady." The King began in his court voice. "What seems to be
the problem?"

The Baron stood straight and calmly looked the king in the eye. "Sire it has
come to my attention that A Lady Raelin Morgance is trying to claim her
Father's lands. We have come to ask your majesty to consider another
applicant to the lands. My Sister was married to the Late Lord Kendall
Morgance. I would like to put my family's name into the race so to speak.
After all Raelin is only 16, and has never been outside her villiage. Nor is
she ..." he looked at his wife calmly. "Stable."

His wife nodded.

"Sire I know it is not done to speak ill of the dead, but I knew Lord
Kendall well." The Baron continued. "He kept Lady Raelin inside the house,
because of her.. criminal attitudes and her instability to handle even the
most mundane tasks." He paused to draw breath. "Especially after my late
sister died in mysterious circumstances." Not once did the lord raise his
voice, sound hysterical or even seem flustered. His tone was calm and polite
and he spoke about the case as if infront of a judge, for in this case he
most certainly was.

"I would like to hear more about her criminal attitudes and her
instability." The King said his face an impassive mask not giving anything
away.

The Baron nodded and his son handed him a scroll. Which the Baron then
presented to the king. "Sire this is a list of people who will swear that,
the young woman is unstable. All have been members of her household for
years, since her mother's death. Each have listed the events which they
deemed her, unstable. One such person, a Lilly Hadyen, was housekeeper there
until Raelin in a mad fit, attacked her because her dinner was not prepared
an hour earlier then needed." Here he paused again."And another, adds the
claim of witch craft, which many in the villiage fear her for. And as for
her criminal activities, look no further then her own father's death.
Soliders of the One god, would never attack a peacefull lord. It was
obviously her, to be given her father's lands. And we strongly believe that
my sister death was murder and not suicide."

Hawk kept his thoughts about the followers of the one God to himself. "I
will want to speak to those witnesses myself." He said. "And be very
careful before you call anybody a murderer. I don't take kindly to false
accusations, you had better have a lot of proof."

Kenith drew out another scroll. It was the proof they had brought with them.
Of course the king did not know it was fake. He handed it to the king.

"the witnesses will be brought here when you wish to speak to them Sire. "
the baron replied.

"as soon as possible. I will let you know." The King said, first he wanted
to speak to Lady Raelin again and give her a chance to defend herself.

"You are dismissed." The King said.

The family bowed and curtseyed and backed out of his majesty's presence. Once they were out the door and down the hall, they found the best alcove and stoped and discussed the conversation privately.

The way the Wind Blows."

By

Lady Raelin Morgance
Lady of Morin

Sir Aidan Lochlainn
High Night of Wind

Healer for the house of Morgance

Lady Marissa Marchand, Lady of Kyle.

Padric, Man at arms of Morgance

Raelin slept for a long while and when she woke she
found herself in a bed. ~Strange~ she thought ~I do
not recall going to bed.~ She could feel that she was
still dressed and she opened her eyes cautiously.

Aidan leaned back against the chair he was sitting
in, and was watching her. "Ah so you're awake." he
said with a small smile. "You needed a nap."

"How? What?" she managed to ask as she sat up. "Why
am I in your bed?"

"A little help from a new friend, and because I
couldn't exactly let you sleep in a chair now could I.
And before you ask what I think you will no nothing
happened I sat here the entire time." he replied
with a small smile.

She swung her legs off the bed and stood. "I was not
going to ask that. I think i would be able to tell if
you had done something. H-how are you feeling?"

He smirked. "I am alright I could use a nap in a
bit, but it can wait. What about you how do you
feel?"

"I feel fine thank you." she said wishing she had
not slept in his bed with him watching her. She was
about to say something more when there was a knock at
the door. She turned as Padric entered. He took in her
sleep tossaled appearance and the smirking Knight in a
glance but dismissed it. "Lady Raelin? Baron Pritchard
and his family have just arrived in the city." Rae
went slightly pale.

Aidan looked from Padric to Lady Raelin. "What is
going on?" he asked softly noticing her paler than
normal face, as he slowly stood.

"The Baron is a principal land owner in our
provence." Padric said.
"He is also the older brother of my father's second
wife." Raelin added as she made her way to the window
seat.
"He goes to see the king Raelin." Padric said.
"I understand that Padric..." she looked out the
window.

Aidan sighed. "So in other words he goes so you lose
your lands." he said as he walked towards the two. "Is
there anything I can do to help you?"

Raelin did not respond. She stared out the window.
Padric however wished he could say yes. "Sir Knight,
if the Baron tells the king things that, even though
are not true and if the king believes him, then you
will be best to distance yourself from the Morgance
family. The Baron believes that Raelin killed his
sister, as well as is a witch."

Aidan sighed. "Ah what about trial by combat?" he
asked as he sat on the bed next to Raelin, and looked
between the two of them.

"The Baron would never agree to it. Nor would his
son, Lord Kenith. If Raelin had returned to Morin with
her father's body then this would not be even heard
of. They had sent a messanger to her father stressing
that Raelin would never make a match with her
'criminal record' and that marriage to Kenith was the
only way to salvage Morgance family honor. Needless to
say both Lord Kendall and Lady Raelin ignored them. I
fear that had we gone back, they would have forced a
wedding." Padric replied calmly as possible. Rae
suddenly turned.
"Padric. I want to know what they say to the king.
Find out by any means. If they are plotting my demise,
be it by assasination or by noose I need to know."

Aidan shook his head. "I doubt that they would do
that at this point, but they could do something just
as bad. MArriage to this Kenith would do what to Lady
Raelin? Also they would not like to dishonor their
late sister, and Aunt." Aidan replied looking over at
Rae.

Rae turned to face him. "Kenith has already been
married once. She died. He threw her down stairs, the
christmas before his aunt died, in front of his family
and mine. That is what marriage to him would do to
me.. Aislinn is dead. They care nothing for that, only
to get lands."

"And with the death of lady Rae the lands could be
decreed away by the king. Though that is only a
thought because I am not sure about the laws as of
yet. So marriage and an untimely death would be the
most likely course of action." he replied. He then
turned to Padric. "I do have an idea though, but I
would need permission to pursue it."

"Permission from who?" asked Padric wondering what
the knight had planned.

"That depends, on who is Lady Raelin's guardian." he
replied looking serious.

Rae and Padric exchanged looks. "That would be
Marissa." Rae said. "My.. well.. adopted Aunt.

"And where is she?" he asked slowly rising to stand.
"I would like to speak with her today if possible."

Padric nodded and headed for the door. "Sir... I
warn you, the lady is very old and not in good humor
most of the time."

"Yes well I would like to speak with her in private
first if I may, and thank you." he said softly as he
stood.

Padric nodded and lead the way out of the room and
down a hall. He stoped a heavy door and knocked.
"what is it?" came an irate voice.
"Lady Marissa? It is Padric, I have someone who wants
to speak to you."
"Oh very well" came the reply. Raelin was hovering
behind the knight as Padric opened the door.

Aidan nodded and turned to Padric. "Please take her
out of ear shot." he said as he entered and bowed to
the Lady Marissa. "Milady, if I may speak to you about
something which I think may change things in this
home." he said as he stood up from the bow.

Lady Marissa watched as the door closed and a
resistant Raelin was led out of sight. She then turned
to the man before her. Her old face watched him
carefully and she pulled her shawl tighter around her.
"Well then young man, What is it? and Who are you?"

Aidan smiled. "My name is Sir Aidan Lochlainn, and I
am the High knight of Wind, and I would like to speak
with you about Lady Raelin." he said tersely but
curtiously.

"What about my neice?" Asked the woman.

"First may I sit? And I shall explain it all" he
said as he tried to relax. It was difficult when he
knew that Lady Raelin would probably kill him after
this, but he wanted to repay her for looking after
him, by looking after her at least this once.

Marissa nodded and indicated a chair. "please"

Aidan sat, and clasped his hands together. "Well I
would like to ask for your niece's hand." he said
holding in a smile, and clenching his hands.

The woman's shock was evident. But she quickly
composed herself. "Really? Why?"

Aidan had to hide a frown he wasn't exactly ready
for that. "Well because she is exactly what I want as
a wife, she can stand for herself yet she is caring,
and she has a brain and uses it. That is aside from
the deep affection that continues to grow for her."
he didn't add that he thought that doing this would
save her lands, and he felt obligated, but what he had
said was true he knew that much.

"really." Marissa studied him "And is she aware of
your.. inclination?"

He smirked. "You do realize she is a steal trap and
any attempt to take her freedom which telling her
would more than likely lead to that or so she might
think. So no I haven't besides I would rather get
certain things finished before hand."

"I am not inclined to force my neice, adopted though
she might be into my family and vice versa, into a
relationship that she might find abhorant." Marissa
though considered this knight a very good catch. "But
If thou wishes to woo her, then you have my
permission."

He smiled. "Thank you milady. Now do you think that
she has escaped her keeper and is at the door?" he
asked with a small smile.

There was no sound from the door and Marissa shook
her head. "Padric is firm with her. I think you will
find the doorway and the corridor beyond empty."

He nodded. "May I ask anothe possibly more intimate
question then milady?" he asked as he stood and moved
towards the door.

  "Yes?"

"Why not smile some more milady I think it would
cheer up the rest of the household." he said as he
opened the door. "I am sorry if I have overstepped the
bounds, but I think I should find your niece. Oh would
it be possible for a basket meal to be prepared." he
said as he started to step through the door.

"Just inform the servants Sir Knight. Good luck I
think you will need it. And when this household is in
mourning, people do not smile."

"Yes milady, but right now mourning may be the
undoing of this household, at least that is what I
fear." he said and was gone. Heading back towards his
room he stopped a servant and asked for a basket of
food to be prepared. He then walked back to his room
quickly, hoping to find Lady Raelin and Sir Padric
there.

As he approached he heard Raelin's voice and
Padric's lower baratone. "Please Padric."
 "NO."
 "Why not?"
"Because it is impolite to evesdrop"
 "Says you." she groused.

Aidan opened the door and chuckled. "Yes well it is
not like she would have heard much. Though if you
will please accompany Lady Raelin, I would like to
take a tour of the grounds if you would be so kind."
he said with a small smile.

Rae's eyes narrowed slightly and Padric now had a
fair idea what was going on. "Very well" Raelin said
trying to keep her cool.

He smiled and moved to take her hand. "If it is ok
though I would like to stop at the kitchen ." he said
as he started to lead her towards the door.

Raelin followed silently wondering why she was going
along so bidably with this man.

Aidan smiled. "So do you feel better?" he asked as
he tried to find the kitchen. "Umm... which way are
the kitchens?" he asked trying to hide the small frown
on his face.

"Left and then down the stairs." Raelin said. "I am
fine. I feel just fine."

He sighed and then nodded. "Thank you Stay here for
a moment alright." he said and then took off to the
kitchens, and was back moments later with a basket in
his hand. "Shall we continue?" he aked softly.

She glanced at what he had in his hand and her eyes
flew to his with suspision in them. "What is going
on?"

"Just something peaceful, and a tour of the grounds,
if you do not mind." he said softly. "I mean if you
do not wish to I understand."

She considered his words. "No its not a problem, I
do not mind." She moved towards the front door. "This
way..."

He smiled and followed her. "Care to show me your
favorite spot on the lands?" he asked as he moved to
catch up to her.

"There is not much here, just a few acers but this
way there is a small, pond.."

He nodded. "Shall we go there?" he asked as softly
as he could, reaching to grab her hand.

She looked at his hand encloseing hers and gave a
small nod.

He hid his smile and walked with her. "So what're
you thinking?" he asked as they exited the front door.

"I am trying to figure out how not to get killed."
She said softly.

"Perhaps when things calm down, it will work out,
but for now perhaps laying low will help for now." he
said as he let her lead him towards the pond that she
had spoke of.

She shrugged. "and if the King believes them, what
good would lying low do? And what will happen to the
people who work on my family's holdings?" She seemed
to be very concerned about this.

He shook his head slowly. "Will you let me help or
no?" he asked gently. "I can help you, if you let
me." he squeezed her hand softly, as the pond came
into view.

"how? I do not think anyone has the power other then
the king to stand up against the Baron,.."

Aidan smiled. "I do believe that I can help. You do
not know exactly who I know, besides I care, about
you. Just give me a chance to help." he said softly.

Rae sat down on a stone bench beside the pond. She
bit her lip and considered it. "..Ok.."

He smiled, and sat the basket down. "Are you hungry
at all?" he asked as he sat infront of her. "Or would
you rather talk?"

She shook her head. "I do not eat much, ... talking
is fine."

He frowned. "Well aside from your fear what are you
thinking? I mean a lot could happen and I think all
can be saved, but I do need your help to pull all of
this off." he said as he opened the basket and pulled
out some of the food. "You also need to eat
something."

"Why do you want to help me? You know nothing about
me. Infact from what Padric and I have told you, you
should be turning your back on me."

He chuckled. "Perhaps, but you are not like any of
the other women I have to deal with, and it makes you
special. Besides not many would watch over someone
like you did, and that tells me what you are truly
like." he said softly.

She gave a small shrug. "I am sure tomorrow you will
be back serving the King, I only did it so you got the
best care possible."

He smiled. "You still didn't have to, yet you did,
so if you would like I could visit you here when I can
and we could at least exchange letters." he said with
a small smile as he offered her some food. "Please
eat."

She took the apple he handed her silently. "Exchange
letters.. I am sorry but i forsee great trouble
ahead."

"As do I, but what harm is there, and if you wish I
think you will be pleased, but that is for you to
decide. Just let me ask you something when this meal
is over alright." he said as he took his own apple.

She nodded and bit tentatively into her own apple.

He smiled and started to eat his own apple. "Please
relax and enjoy today alright."

She wondered how she could relax with someone trying
to kill her and the Baron in town. It did not bode
well for her at all. But she nodded again. After a
moment Raelin finished her apple and gazed out over
the pond.

He sighed and sat next to her. "You know I can carry
some of the burden that you do if you will share it
with me." he said softly as he moved an arm around her
slowly.

She looked at him, ignoring the arm. "I have already
burdened you so much Sir, that I can not in good
consience let you be burdened with more."

He sighed. "I am asking you to burden me. Do you
wonder why I wished to talk to your Aunt?" he asked as
he looked off into the forest. "And why are you
afraid, is it because it may be something that you
want to here but are afraid of it not being so?"

"I do not know." she said honestly.

"Alright well what do you think happened?" he asked
softly.

"I am not sure. But you came out alive so i guess
you did not make her mad."

He chuckled. "She is not as bad as you say she is.
But do you wish to know what we discussed?"

"Yes I would if you would be so kind."

He smiled. "Well I asked permission for two things I
guess it depends on you if I get to." he said. "But I
asked permission to court and marry you."

"you what?" she managed to ask after a moment of
shock

He sighed, what had he done now. "I asked permission
to court and marry you. Is there a problem with
that?"

"I.. you do not know me... why .. how can you even
consider such a thing?"

"Well lets see, I like you, you are exactly what I
would like in a wife, you care as well as other
reasons." he purposefully left out the part about how
he felt that he was obligated to help her.

  "What other reasons?"

"If I said looks you would become upset." he said
softly, as he rested his arm on her side.

"I am definately not a pretty person so I will take
it that you are being sarcastic."

He sighed. "Why do you say that you are not pretty?"
he asked. softly.

"Because it is true." She gave a small non commital
shrug.

"I have to disagree with you on that." he said as he
leaned forward slightly. "May I?"

"may you what?" she asked puzzled.

"May I do this." he said as leaned in and kissed her
gently.

The kiss startled her and she froze in her spot.
When he pulled back she stared at him in shock.

He frowned as he pulled back. "I am sorry. I
shouldn't have." he said and moved to stand.

She eventually found her voice. She looked at the
ground. "I am sorry, it is just I have never been..
kissed before. I meant no offence."

He frowned. "I am sorry as well, but I couldn't help
myself. It will not happen again unless you wish it
too." he said in a near whisper.

She sat there silently considering his words and
soon raised her head. "I.. do not mind it, to be
honest."

He smiled a small smile. "I thought it was
improper." he said teasingly

"I may be.. but I did not mind it." she said a blush
stealing into her cheeks.

He smiled. "Would you like another?" he asked
softly.

She did not know how to answer that. "maybe" she
hedged.

His frown slowly disappeared and he leaned forward
again slowly.

Raelin moved her head towards him slowly as well

He smiled and gently pressed his lips against hers.

Raelin pressed her lips against his, mimcing his
movements, though she had no real idea what she was
doing

He kept the pressure on her lips gentle and slowly
slid his other arm around her and slowly pulled her
towards him.

She did not balk at his movements but allowed him to
pull her closer.

He stopped when her legs hit his, and pulled back
slowly smiling slightly. "So what does this mean?"

"i.. am unsure. Some might say i used the dark arts
on you.." she said softly.

"And I know that you did not. So that doesn't
matter, but I would like to do something if you do not
mind."

    "And that is?"

"If I may pull you up onto my lap." he said softly.
as he ran a hand up her side slowly.

She thought about it and nodded. "ok"

He smiled and pulled her up onto his lap slowly. "Is
this ok?"

She felt a bit strange. "This is not proper is it?"
She asked timidly.

"Well that depends I guess. I mean it isn't but in
courting it is." he said as he held her loosely.
"Would you like me to let you go?"

She gave a shy nod. "please. I... am sorry."

He hid a frown. "It's alright I am sorry."

She looked at him. She drew apart from his embrace
and stood. "Sir, why do you want to pursue this path?
I know the lands of Morin are well coveted.."

He sighed. "I am not doing this to to gain land I am
doing this because I want to. Why do you question my
motives?" he asked as he looked at her softly.

"Because I have learned that not all is what it
seems. People are not nice just because they want to
be Sir."

He sighed. "Some of us are, though there are those
who aren't, and my name is Aidan please." he said as
he moved away from her to give her some space.

She watched him quietly for a moment. "I am sorry.
Its just with all that has been happening, it is hard
to trust people.."

"I understand. I am sorry I shall leave you know if
that is what you wish." he said as he stood.

"I.. I owe you a lot for saving me the other day.
You put yourself in danger when you should not have...
I am sorry for seeming so.. nasty."

He shook his head. "You owe me nothing, I did what I
did out of my own heart, and what I feel. Nothing
more nothing less."

"how can you feel that way when you do not know me?"

"It does not always take long to feel something,
sometimes it happens very quick." he said as he moved
and started to repack the basket.

"It hurts to feel" she said softly turning away.

"Yes it can, but if you don't feel then you can't
love, and love is something that is very special." he
said as he started to fold the blanket he had laid
out.

She looked at him. "You do not understand." She said
softly. "You can't possibly understand"

"I can't understand what it is to feel pain? To
lose someone that you care for? I have lost many a
friend in battles Lady Raelin. I know what the pain
of loss is like." he said as he put the blanket away.

"But not the only person who ever cared for you and
protected you no matter what." She said turning away.
"My father risked everything when he sided with me
against his wife."

He frowned. "Your father loved you very much, and he
did risk much doing that, but you can't dishonor his
memory by not living do you think he would want that?"
he asked picking up the basket.

"I am doing what he wanted. HE wanted me to come
here instead of going back to make sure he was buried
properly He wanted me married and safe!"

"But are you living or would you rather be home
burying your father?" he asked as he looked at her
again.

"I never wanted to leve Morin." She said softly
still not looking at him. "Safe or not. He would still
be alive."

"But would he have truly been alive? He wanted you
to get married because he loved you, and he wanted
someone to be there for you when he was gone." he said
, as he started to move away.

Raelin did not reply straight away. His words hit
her but she could not fully answer him even if she had
been able to. She dropped to her knees and wrapped her
arms around her body as silent tears and sobs racked
her body.

Aidan looked over his shoulder and dropped the
basket then moved over to her. "Are you ok?" he asked
softly, as he knelt before her.

She tried to nod and her head shook. She could not
bring herself to answer him.

He frowned and opened his arms slowly to wrap them
around her. "You aren't alright. Please talk to me."
he said gently.

"I.. Can't.. keep going like this..." She managed to
get out between sobs.

He pulled her against him. "Tell me everything." he
said softly, as he started to rub her back.

She tried to draw a clear breath but only managed a
ragged one. "My father decided to come to court after
my stepmother committed suicide, he chose the route,
the men, and we set off. He.. never said a word about
her death. He never said a word about my mother's
either. When we were attacked, he died. Told Padric to
make sure we got here. He just left me. After
promising me for years he would not die like my mother
did, he .. left." She felt anger, pain and saddness as
she spoke

"He isn't really gone, he is still in your heart and
memory, and death is never something that is easy to
talk about. I think he didn't want to push his grief
to you. He wants you safe, and the only way he saw it
was getting you married." he said softly, rubbing her
back.,

"Why? I was safe at Morin.." she managed to ask.

"But you wouldn't be forever, and he knew that. He
also wanted you to be happy and have a family." he
said softly.

"me? A family? no. No one wants me for that."

"Are you sure about that?" he asked as he rubbed her
back. "Or do you just assume that?"

"I am 16! No one has ever asked nor even approached
my family. who wants someone well past the age of
marriage?"

"Well lets see I tried a picnic, and I did speak to
your Aunt, does that give you a clue?" he asked
frowning.

"But You can't! Your repuation.. you can't!"

"My reputation will survive, as will I, besides I am
not concerned about it, nearly as much as you are. I
am more concerned about you and what you think and
feel."

She raised a tear stained faceto look at him.
"b-but..." she began to protest

He gently touched her face. "No buts, just relax,
live and love alright."

"I.. do not know if I can."

"You can try though but that is up to you, and your
future."\

~What if I do not have a future~ she thought. "What
if he believes them?"

"You mean the King?" he asked softly.

  She nodded

"Well I can work things out with him I think, and
you will be with me if you want, that is if you want
me to court you." he said gently.

She thought about it. "Will you give me time to
think?

He nodded. "Of course I need to return to the castle
as it is." he said smiling to her.

"Are you well enough to ride?"

"I see little choice, in the matter." he replied.

  She tilted her head. "why?"

"I need to get back, and I do not want to put you in
danger again." he said as he stood.

"Dont you mean me put you in danger?" she asked

"I mean put you in danger." he said "I care for you
I do not want you hurt."

"Ok.." she did not know what else to say to that."

He nodded. "I will visit and return if you wish and
you can always send me a letter and I will respond ."
he said as he offered her his hand.

She slowly took his hand. "I understand" she said
softly.

"I hope you do, I care for you Raelin, and I would
like to go as far as you wish." he said softly as he
pulled her up.

She looked up at him as she stood. "Thank you"

He smiled and looked down at her. "You're welcome.
Shall we go in?" he asked softly.

Raelin nodded and allowed him to lead her inside

"the room"

Rowena
Isa
Iorwerth

Rowena was sort of dreading her mother's reaction to the scar if her father's
was anything to go by. She buried her face against her father's neck as they
entered her mother's parlor. She did not relish this at all.

She heard her parents talk softly for awhile and then she was transferred into
her mother's arms who sat down with her. "Can I have a look, sweetheart?" Isa
asked.

"It is nothing, mama." Rowena said but obediently tipped her head up. The
scar had been well tended and would leave only a faint line once healed. At
the moment, it still held the anger of skin damaged. It was also clear that it
would have taken only a slightly deeper cut to end the young girl's life.

Isa said nothing for several seconds. She realised that she had come close to
losing this daughter, and she had not been safe in the forest after all. "you
must have been so scared, sweetheart." She said holding the little girl
close.

"I had Thosa." Rowena answered. "I miss him." She sighed. Her new protector
was a nice man, but he was not Thosa.

"what happened to him, honey?" Her mother asked.

"Elianor wouldn't let him come with me. She said he failed if the Raven got
that close. But, it was my fault." She admitted ruefully. "I wasn't supposed
to be out that far and I had insisted."

"Darling, this elianor has a point. If he was supposed to look after you, he
should not have let you go." Her mother chided gently. "Yet if you miss him,
we could always ask if he would like to visit here."

"He is not done with something important." Rowena muttered sadly. "I do miss
him though. I will see him when I go back."

Isa tensed. "you still want to go back?"

"Aye, but not right away. I still have much to learn. I didn't have much
time."
Rowena answered in a matter of fact tone. She did not pick up on her mother's
tone. "Da promised I could train when I was nine. I am nine now."

"your father should learn to keep his mouth shut." Isa sighed. "yet he did not
say that you could leave home, did he? We agreed to let you go to the forest
because it would be safer. That hasn't proved to be true."

Rowena stared at her and then looked over at her father. "I have to go back."
She stated firmly. "There is too much I cannot learn here."

"sweetie." He said. "Why not wait a few years. There's a lot for you to
learn here as well. And we worry about you when you are not here, and we miss
you. You belong here with your family."

Rowena looked at him sadly. He could see it in her eyes. If the time came
and the druids called, she would go. He would have to lock her in to keep her
here. "I miss you too, papa." She said quietly. "I can see well now." She said
to her mother, trying to change the subject.

her parents looked at each other sadly, then her mother pulled herself
together. "that's wonderful, my dear." She smiled.

iorwerth excused himself, there where things he had to see to.

"Ro, as you are a bigger now, how about we redecorat your room, and you get to
choose." isa said.

Rowena's eyes lit with pleasure. "Really, I can leave the nursery?" She hated
having a nurse.

"yes you can, I think you have proved that you are old enough." And her
mother hoped that she would like her new room so much that she would want to
stay.

Rowena was very excited at this prospect. Maybe they would see she was not
a baby anymore. "When can we start?"

"as soon as you want, I have time." it made Isa happy to see her little girl
like this.

"Today?" Rowena begged prettily.

"today will be fine. First you have to think about what you want." Her
mother
said.

Rowena grinned. "Can we go to the market?" She asked. She hadn't seen
the market since the people had taken her away.

her mother hesitated. "Yes, but we will have to take many bodyguards."

"I don't mind. I am getting used to them being about. I have one of my own
now." Rowena said with a giggle.

"in that case give me half an hour to arrange things and we can go." Isa said
affectionately.

"I will fetch my cloak." She kissed her mother's cheek and then her father's
and scurried from the room.

her parents laughed, glad to see her so full of life again. "I will go and
arrange the bodyguards." Iorwerth said.

"Problems of a Regal Nature"

Queen Arianna
Sir Brendan ap Iowerth

Brendan walked the corridors of the castle deep in thought. The servants
noticing his mood gave him space, because they young man looks like he
hardly knew where he was going. Some of the women smiled realising what was
happening to him.

Arianna saw him first and saw him in deep contemplation. "Penny for your
thoughts?" she asked him with an amused look on her face.

He smiled, his brother must be doing something right, these corridors were
filled with lovely ladies, although none were as lovely as Diora.

"Private problems, my lady." He said charmingly. "Family."

The shock of blond hair and his eyes looked familiar to her. "Family
problems, seems everyone has those these days." she said to him.

"Certainly not a lady such as you." He said smiling. "I cannot believe that.
I haven't seen you around before, what is your name, my lady?"

"Arianna ui Llewellyn and yes even certainly a lady such as myself. Now I
ask the same of you, good sir...of your name." She cocked her head quietly
and eyed Brendan trying to figure him out. She still could not figure out
who he was but he looked familiar.

"Brendan ap Iorwerth at your service, my lady." He bowed.

"Ah welcome yes...we have a mutual agreement then." She said to him with a
smile. " What do you mean, my lady?" He asked her.

"You are a son of Iowerth and I am married to one." she said to him. She
would rather him figure out the connection.

His face fell. "You are married to Hawk? He's back."

"Aye, but do not look so crestfallen. You need not see him if you wish not
too." She said to her brother-in-law.

"It's his castle, it's all bloody his, and he has his way of rubbing my nose
in that. I am sorry, I should not be taking this out on you, you probably
are a very nice girl. I just wish you could have kept him away a
bit longer, I don't get many opportunities to come home."

She had seen anger like this before. The resentment in his eyes was enough
for her. "Maybe you should try and reconcile your differences with your
brother." She said crossing her arms in front of her. "You should not let
him get to you. You are a knight and in good standing...I think it's time
you fixed the rift that is between the two of you." She said looking at him
quietly.

"Impossible, you don't know how he is..."Brendan paused and laughed. "I
mean you don't know how he is with me. The man is a sanctimonious bastard,
my lady."

"I believe you...but you need to figure things out...as you had a look on
your face like you saw an angel and the dream in your eye seemed to stamp
out cold in the hearth of your brother...when I mentioned him back. Come,
calm thyself and tell me who plays your heartstrings." She said changing the
subject a bit.

He looked at her incredulously . "How did you know, I haven't told
anybody." Then he sighed. "Women. Her name is Diora, she works for my
brother and she is incredible." He admitted.

Arianna didn't say anything. So the younger brother of the king is smitten
with Diora. Many men are, she is beautiful. "Some things I know...and if
she is as incredible as you say she is...then why not do it for her?" She
asked him.

He blushed. "The lady is recently widowed, I do not even know if she... I
think she feels something for me, but she doesn't want to...you know...it's
easier on her as well if I leave."

"If there are feelings there from her...it'll be harder on her if you
leave." she said to him in kind. "Why strain your heart, you must know how
she does feel." she said quietly.

"Why would she feel anything for me, a misfit, a beautiful lady like she.
we have only known each other a day." he said hesitantly.

"Why not? I find you rather charming and not a misfit to say the least.
You may have only known her for a day but I have just met you. Do not deny
what you are feeling...for if you do, another may come along and you'll
never have a chance to find out...then you'll be heartbroken. What's
worse...fighting your brother or dealing with a nagging wound in your
heart..."she asked him.

"You don't know my brother." He sighed.

"I know him enough that his is protective of his family...which I think is
why you two butt heads." Arianna said. "I'll leave the decision up to you.
Ultimately it is yours." She said to him. "But a little advice. Don't jump
to leave at the first chance without saying goodbye to her. Her heart was
broken once. I don't know what it would do to her if it was broken again."
She said in warning.

"Maybe I should talk to her. Can you keep my brother away from me?"
Brendan asked.

"As busy as he is...I doubt you'll see him unless he knows your here, which
I doubt for the time being." Arianna said. "I'll do my best...but I do
suggest you talk with him as well."

Now he looked like a little boy. "Must I?" He asked.

"It would be wise." She said to him.

He pouted. "You talk to him first."

"He'd find you before I could get to him first." she said knowing that he
was acting like a child and would not play to his game. "Go do what you
must..."she said finally.

"I will talk to Diora, you talk to your husband." With that he left.

"You don't know what you are getting into..." she said to no one at all and turned to talk with Hawk and heard an interesting conversation down the hall...a plot for murder...and how they were going to succeed. Arianna smiled and watched them disburse smug smile to themselves and sure that no one heard. She went to tell Hawk all that she had heard.

"A Dreamscape"

Diora di`Annagar

Kingdom of Abertawe

The darkness receded as the dawn began to peer over the mountains in the distance. She could smell the dew and wondered how long she had been out in open air. Then it dawned on her. Diora realized that she was in Dyfadd and she was apparently alone. The sky brightened and the shadows started to swirl. That's when she heard the yelling. She knew that voice, it was Hawk and the other was Brendan. They were arguing over the healer and about her well being.

"What do you know of her…she's a fragile creature. You and your cavalier ways would crush her heart. She's pregnant for the gods sake." She heard Hawk yell.

"Why can't you just be happy for me…for us…you never once understood me nor did you trust me to do something of worth…now I am trying to do something of worth and you are criticizing even that." That was the last straw. She knew she had to run. The last time she was fought over she was the one that had gotten hurt.

She didn't want to hurt. She had been hurting for the past several cycles and it didn't get any easier. She knew that leaving wouldn't solve anything but she was being driven to the trees again. The voice she kept hearing…it kept calling to her. The trees it seemed to echo the voice.

"Come to me…I will ease the pain and hurt…you'll not grieve any longer." It called to her and the voice was familiar. So she sought the trees. She could smell the Aspen and the oaks once again and the laughter as she had heard so many times as she had when she was a child. The feeling of freedom that she had missed for so long came back to her and that's when she slowed. The feeling of remorse and loss that she thought she left in the castle had found her here as well. She ran now…her feet bare, though she knew she had put her boots on. Brambles and vines were reaching out to tear at her skin and her clothing to tear her to shreds. They had a mind of their own. The whole time her peaceful feeling was turning to dread. The argument and sadness that rang in her ears carried the within the brambles. Each time an argument came up another snag caught her. She couldn't escape the throws of the families and their arguments.

"Goddess guide me." She yelled over the yelling and a soft light through the center of the brambles and snags came toward her as she tried to free herself. The face through the light was that of Gwilym. "You must choose." He told her calmly. There were brambles that barred them. "If you continue the path with me, you'll not return nor will our children survive. If you go with the direction of the brambles and guide them to grow a better way, they will not tear at you any longer. Let go…let go of it all and you'll know where you stand. Your time is now, Diora…guide them where they have lost their way…do not fight them for they continue to fight with themselves. You'll gain greater knowledge as you remain where you are." The voice had changed and Gwilym no longer remained between the brambles. "Seek a way, you are a key in their life…they thrive from you as a rose does among the brambles. Become that rose and make them strong for you will need the protection in time to come." The voice said to her and disappeared.

She smelled the trees then again. "Let go and ease your pain…let go and live yet again, for there you and your families with thrive. You are a rose among thorns. You must live and grow." The trees called to her and it was then that she heard Timor's cry. She looked up and saw the pair of hawks flying in the sky. Once keened and then the other called behind. As the second rose to meet its mate…she then saw the raven…the raven flew between the two hawks to keep them from flying together.

Everything moved from there. She was no longer watching the fight but she felt herself falling…farther and farther down. She could not stop the hunter that hunted after the hawks, which were led by the raven. She tried to yell…to deter the hunter but she could not see his face. As she tried, she fell and kept falling into oblivion…she tried to scream but it would not release from her throat. "Seek a way…" she heard again. She tried and panicked. The more she panicked the worse the terror got and the darker the blackness returned. It was then that the laughter of the wicked returned. In the darkness that she found herself, images of people that she knew and loved carried her gently to the bottom. The images started out that way but they kept returning to Gwilym's face, then to Hawk and then to Brendan…the three had instead of leading her to safety started again to pull at her. Their argument was plummeting her farther into the darkness.

"Stop…" she cried. "I'm not that important…" she yelled at them but they heard her not and she fell farther and started to scream. She was falling so fast that all three yelled for her before the ground rose up to meet her. It was then that she woke up, just before she hit the ground.

Sweat poured off her face as she realized she was no longer in the forest and the arguments had not happened, but the feelings were real. It was shown to her what would happen if things didn't change. Her nightmares became reality if she didn't change the situation or if the situation didn't change because of her. She thought about her life and how much pain she held inside from all that she had growing up until now. She knew that she had to let it go for her health and for her own sanity.

She would have to figure out what to do…and it would only be a matter of time before it came to her. She would be ready when it did…

"Conflicts of Duty and Honor"
Lord Iowerth
Lord Alterian
Sir Aiden
Sir Gwynne
Sir Mathius

Iorwerth had led the call go out amongst the knights that he needed volunteers for a dangerous mission, and he needed them quickly. Now he stood waiting in his own private office to see how many men would come forward and follow him.

Aidan had just finished settling Night in the stables for the night, when a young squire approached him. The young squire told Aidan about the Kings father wanting to meet with the knights of the realm who were present. Aidan nodded and left the squire to search out more knights. It took Aidan longer than he would care to admit to find his way around the castle and to the room that he had to go to. Once there he knocked and entered. "You wished to speak to the knights of the realm?" he asked.

"I did." The general said. "I will explain when more people join us, because I sure hope you will not be the only one."

Mathius had spent plenty of time within the castle's library and ventured out to the Sanglet lands once to see what the war had left him. Well, that is if the king decided to let him have it. The lands were Mathius' by birthright but the Sanglet before him had committed crimes against the crown, and the king had the right to forfeit such lands based on those actions. Mathius knew he needed to make the king see that he would be better than any Sanglet before him, but that seemed impossible with Hawk on
his honeymoon.

It was dawn and Mathius had made his way towards the kitchen. As he entered, he overheard two squires talking about the Lord Iowerth's requests for knights to follow him on a mission. Mathius himself was not a knight but immediately decided that this was the kind of thing that would help place himself within the king's graces. After grabbing a small bite to eat and gathering his sword, bow, quiver, and armor, Mathius made his way over towards the gathering. He could see two men talking already and
identified one of them as Iowerth.

"Lord Iowerth. I am Mathius ap Cornellius. I overheard your call for realm knights to ride with you on a mission, and I beg of you that I might be able to follow you. I am proficient in weapon and have a good eye with a bow. I swear to you my presence will be of aid and not hinderance." Mathius held his head low bowing towards the General of the Armies.

Iorwerth smiled and clasped the younger man's shoulder. "Cornelius' cub, I had been meaning to seek you out boy. Your father was a dear friend of mine. And I will be glad to have you along."

"Your Grace, I must protest. Should not such actions wait until the King returns?" Ian said, stepping out of the shadows. The man had a way of appearing at the oddest times. "And whom did my son leave in command here?" The general snarled. "Did you
see my little girl? She almost killed Rowena and I will see that that bitch can't do any more harm."

"Do you not think your son … might not like a part of that?" Ian suggested. Once the general was riled, it was hard to calm him. "If nothing else, an angrily wielded sword strikes wildly and this woman has shown great cunning. Why, she even has her hooks into some of your own knights?" Ian stated.

"What the hell is that supposed to mean." Iorwerth was still angry. "She fianced Sir Gwynne in his merchanting endeavors. She had a relationship with Sir Amlyn. Who knows who else she has subverted." Alterian laid it but before Iowerth.

"Gods!!" The general exclaimed. "Where are they? I want to hear the truth about this. If this is true, it's all the more reason to stop her as soon as we can."

"No one has seen Amlyn since you took Lady Morgan from her manor house." Alterian stated. He looked around at the two men. Sanglet's get, and a knight not known for court appearances. How could he let the general go out with such men?

It had taken awhile for Gwynne to finish his scholarly duties for the Castle seneschal and the guardsmen. So, Gwynne was now hurrying to answer the General's call for knights to accompany him. The Page had not given him details as to where or even when, only the General's summons.

Gwynne entered the room to see Iowerth, Aiden and a man he had not seen before and wasn't sure of his name and then the infamous Lord Alterian, the very person who's impertinence and selfishness cost him a beautiful wife, and set him on a new path of loneliness. "My liege," Gwynne bowed stately before the King's father and waited to be addressed.

Alterian rolled his eyes and turned his back to hide his disgust in the knight known so well for his soir's into the rum bottle. If he had his way, then cad would have long since been sent packing. King Hawk was a more benevolent ruler then Alterian would have been.

"Sir Gwynne, Ian had just told me that you have business relationship with a traitor, the lady Morgan, the raven. Is this true?"

The words were incomprehensible to Gwynne at the very sound of them. This could not be the case, Lady Morgan a traitor? What possible reason could she have? Why? The very idea shocked him beyond reason. The incredulity of the information he was digesting was overwhelming poor Gwynne. He had just been named a Baron. He had lands and title again. Gwynne would not risk that for anything. But, he did still have feelings for Morgan. She couldn't be as bad as they seemed to think; could she?

Gwynne sneered at Alterian, and then looked kindly at the General, "I-I-I was unaware of such status upon her reputation milord. I admit to business dealings with her and at one time we were engaged to be married. I have since repaid my debt to her. I also bought her manor. My hearts, lands and very person shall always be loyal to the crown of Abertawe sir, I had no idea she had done anything unlawful or unseeming. I beg milord's forgiveness and ask for a chance to reprove my loyalty to your family," Gwynne replied bowing before Iowerth in great respect. He felt like strangling Alterian at that moment.

Alterian could believe that Sir Gwynne had been played fault by the Lady Morgan. But to believe that he had no idea at the flaws in her character and moral standing were a little harder to bring to bear. He, however, kept his tongue in check, for he would not be accused of allowing his personal feelings to hold sway. Alterian's personal feelings bordered upon contempt, for he held no regard for this wayward knight.

Mathius was about to greet Iowerth, his step father's mentor and commanding officer before retirement, when Alterian entered the picture in a most shady manner. It hadn't bothered Mathius in how he entered. It was more of an unexpected surprise by the elder man. Mathius found the entire course of discussion between Iowerth and Alterian quite intriguing. That was until this Sir Gwynne arrived. In the courts he had spent time in before coming to Abertawe, some kings would have beheaded him just for the interaction between the man and the accused. Traitor was a heavy word on the ears of the courts. A king could behead
anyone at whim for the mere thought of standing against the crown. Affiliation with one was a black marking that could end good standing in court for generations. Mathius did not laugh nor show expression for all that was going before him, but inside he delighted at the exploitations that stood before him: an overzealous father using his daughter as proof of treason and a noble who admitted to having dealings with a now accused lady of treason. Mathius stood behind the confrontation and watched on
memorizing everything.

Iorwerth didn't know what to think. He trusted Ian, yet Gwynne had been invaluable to him in the fight against Sanglet. It was clear however that these two men could not stand each other.

"Do you know where we can find her? You know her best." The general said.

Gwynne was unsure of what to say. He was now wealthy because of Morgan. He had his manor because of Morgan. More importantly, he had a regard for the woman still. However, he could not turn his back on his past. He was noble with noble past. Having land and title once again, he could not walk away from that. In addition, he had a loyalty to the crown and he could not disregard that. Yet, he did not wish to turn his back on Morgan either. It was a conundrum he didn't want to be in. He looked at the General. "She owns The Swan. You will find her there." He paused for a moment. "I praythee milord, that you give her justice but temper it with mercy."

Alterian was forced to hide his grin. Here was the man who supposedly loved his daughter beyond distraction and yet begged for mercy for a known traitor because she had graced his bed. Alterian, however, said naught, for the man was hanging himself quite nicely.

"Mercy?" The general said. "That woman tried to murder my nine-year-old daughter. I have no mercy for child killers." He was getting angry again. "I say we ride out there and we arrest the bitch."

Mathius had almost burst out in laughter. Not only had the knight admitted to a relationship with the accused, but also he had admitted to business dealing including the purchase of her manor. Each step the knight seemed to make pushed him farther in dark territory. If this woman proved to be within terms of treason, the knight could fall be her side in punishment. Mathius could tell by looking at the knight that his situation was one of gullibility. He had been rused by this woman. Whoever she was, she was a player within the king's court judging by her actions here. It would be interesting to see the outcome. Mathius was along for the ride. He wouldn't miss this for anything.

It began to dawn on Mathius who the daughter of Lord Iowerth was. He had met the princess after the reception in Diora's room right before she passed out from fever. She was a stern little girl with a respectable head on her shoulders. Mathius thought of objecting to a child's accusations but the remembrance of her being a druid changed his outlook. "I would agree, Lord Iowerth, that this woman need be brought before king under accusation. I would also advice on the side of caution. Sanglet loyalists still exist even though his threat is gone. If the situation were handled incorrectly, there would be potential fuel to a smoldering fire. Not to mention that if news got out involving the various knights, "Mathius refused to look upon Gwynne as he spoke, "having relations with this woman, it could be damaging to the king's credibility.

Might I lay a suggestion … a ruse of our own? This woman obviously has dealings with this knight," Mathius now turned to look at him, "I mean no offense. I have not heard your name nor think now is the time for formal introductions." Mathius looked back towards Iowerth, "Why not send her a conscript requesting her presence in the courts by desire of this knight? I am sure the loyal knight of the crown might know a legitimate reason to draw her attention. This would prevent public identification of the arrest keeping things in private. No one should be allowed to know of this save us. If she is treasonous by nature, she will have spies about to identify the trap, be it either servants in the castle or guards on the staff. If she is innocent when questioned, she will provide any assistance asked of her. In the mean time, I believe the biggest question would be why is she seeking to kill Princess Rowena? There is always a reason? What does anyone know of this woman, anyway? It is time the king and council learned this. If she is cunning, no amount of questioning will provide you with answers when you ask her. Another fear is that she is a puppet to a great person, force, or cause. Capturing or killing her will only hide the identity of this greater force. These are only a few questions that should be sought. If you act in haste, Milord, we could end up slitting your daughter's throat before we find the truth." Mathius lay silent and let his words hang in the air. Alterian had spoken against this action as well. Mathius wondered what concerns the king's advisor had, but he didn't ask.

The general still didn't like it, he was a man who wanted action and right now. But he realized finally, the wisdom of what was said. Now he turned to Gwynne. "Can you do that?"

Gwynne was horrified by what he'd heard from the others. He had never known that Rowena had been in jeopardy from Morgan. He stood there perplexed and horrified, "Milord, I had no idea that the Princess was ever in jeopardy. I would give my life to save the Princess Rowena as I would any of the Royal Family. Morgan is a cunning witch, who has pulled the proverbial wool over my eyes milord, but no longer. I shall be happy to set a trap for her, and know exactly what to write to get her here," Gwynne paused for a moment, "I owe money, it is my last payment. I can tell her I need her signature to make our agreement final and that I wish to see her, then milord you can spring your trap, and in light of her actions towards the Princess, I retract my plea for mercy, she is a witch, let her burn." He smiled, "But please let me keep the money," his grin seemed to light up his darkened eyes now, he wanted revenge.

"It has always amazed me how when the ship of opportunity begins to sink, the rats quickly abandon ship." Ian quipped quietly. He saw the man's attempt to keep his funds and the manor as crass and showing his lack of nobility in regards to character.

"As you abandoned your daughter milord? I am human, in a position I found myself unawares. Your interference in my life has compounded in severity. You stand there high and with superior bearing, when in reality I have not sired a bastard daughter and abandoned her. My incredulities are light compared to such atrocities. For not even I milord would abandon my responsibilities, and am not doing so now that I know the snake Morgan truly is," Gwynne was hot now, he had enough of this maniac's attacks on him.

"You sir, speak out of hand and without due fact. I expect satisfaction for those words." Alterian's hand was on his sword. He was on the General's left and Gwynne was on the General's right. Alterian wanted nothing more then to remove this man and his influence for court.

"Gentlemen, please." The general said not be used to the role of Peacemaker. "This realm has lost too many of its knights recently. The king now needs each and every one of you. Do you really want to repay him by dueling amongst yourselves?" He kept the amusement out of his voice and face, for almost all of their lives, Ian had always been the one calming him down.

Ian's hand did not leave his sword. "I defer to your need and the crown's." Ian said softly, his eyes never leaving Gwynne's.

"I also defer to the needs of the King, milord. I am ever a servant of your house and the King," he bowed low to the general and, at the same time, kept his hand on his sword's handle and his eyes firmly locked on Lord Ian. He despised the man and would never forgive him for speaking out during his vows to Jolene. Anytime Ian wished to duel, he'd be happy for such sweet satisfaction.

"If Sir Gwynne will be so good as to draft the letter. I will have a page take it immediately." Ian said coldly. Never had he shown such obvious distaste for an individual in all the time that Iowerth had known him to serve the crown. The man was ten years younger then Iowerth and had been a member of the castle staff for at least 25 years. He held his own lands and yet remained ever vigilant as a servant to the crown.

Mathius watched on in humor, at first, to the predicament that was finally coming to an end. He actually had hoped to witness such a duel, for deep in Ian's eyes, Mathius could see a lot more than hid on the surface of the old man who served the kingdom faithfully. There was a fire that burned bearing forth talents not noticeable by first impressions. Mathius' eyes widened at this realization. He had found more than an advisor to the king, Mathius had found someone worthy of mentoring him. Now he had to find a way to receive such privileges.

Aidan continued to stand in the background listening
to the exchanges. He wasn't sure what to make of it
all, so he figured it would be best to remain silent.
Though he would follow out what he was given to the
end.

Iorwerth was satisfied for now, yet he knew he would have to watch these two, and tell his son about what had happened here today.

"A Little Sister's Wiles"
Prince Brendan
Princess Rowena

"Hello little sister." Brendan said. He had slipped into her room without
her noticing. Of course his mother had told him what had happened.

Rowena had been mentally reciting recipes so as not to forget what
Elianor had taught her. Laid out before her were an array of herbs and
other strange plants he had not seen. Her toys lay untouched. They did
not appear to have been moved for some time. "Brendan?" She jumped
up scattering her careful piles in her lap and lept into his arms. "Brendan,
I did not expect to see you?" She covered his face with small kisses.

"I missed you, little one. You have grown! You are becoming quite a lady."
He held her in his arms effortless. "Mum wanted to see me, and Big Brother is
away, so here I am."

"Are you still mad at Hawk?" She asked, looking at him sadly. "I had hoped
you would not be so?"

"I'm not mad, Princess. He can't help that he's such a prick, it's just
better if he and I don't spend time together. Nothing for you to worry about,
you can see us both separately." he ruffled her hair.

"I don't like it that you fight." She said with a childish pout.

"sweetheart, he and I have ever fought. Its normal for us."

"He is changing and so are you. Can you not try to start over?" Rowena
said putting a little hand to his face. "For me?" Her eyes grew large and
the request was there in them.

"let me think on that one, little sister, it's not something that you change
overnight." Her brother said.

"Will you do me another favor?" Rowena asked in a pretty voice that indicated
she wanted something large.

he knew that look. "let's hear it first." Brendan said cautiously.

"Will you take me riding. I want to see a place." She said quietly. "I have
to see if it is the same that I see."

"it depends where you want to do. You know that if we go outside the castle
gates we will have to take bodyguards or our brother will kill me for a good
reason."

"I want to go to Morgan Brasar's manse." Rowena said as if it were not a big
deal. But he could tell by her face, that she wanted this badly.

"who is that?" Her brother asked. "And where is her house."

"Between here and Sanglet's estates." She said. "It would take us a day, I
know but we could take a picnic?"

"I don't know. Do father and mother agree to this? I cannot take you without
permission." Her question troubled him. "is she a friend of yours?"

"I don't want to tell Mum and Da." Rowena pouted. "If I wanted to tell them,
I would have just asked them." She smiled at him. "You do things all the time
without permission?"

"Well honey, I am over ten years older than you are." He grinned.. "And the
fact that you don't want them to know, tells me there is something devious
going on in that smart mind of yours. if you want any chance of cooperation
from me, you going to have to tell me more."

Rowena frowned. "She tried to kill me. Da is going to go after her. But,
there is something she had once that I think I need to find. It .. it was a
black medallion with a raven on it. I .. it is important I find it." She said
seriously.

"she tried to kill you." He was almost speechless hearing that. "I don't
think you should go anywhere near her then. I don't I try to get that
medallion for you if it so important?"

Rowena cocked her head to one side as she thought. "You don't know what
it looks like." She pointed out.

"you could draw it for me." He was not giving up yet.

Rowena pouted prettily. She would be deadly with those large
eyes and the pretty little pout when she was older. "I was big enough
to go find mother when she was lost." Rowena pointed out.

"and that was a big success. do you really want mother and father to worry
about you again?"

"No, but I have to do this." She insisted.. "Please....." Her voice begging
himas only a child can. "I don't want to go without someone."

"you are not going alone, young lady. Okay then, we will do it tomorrow." He
knew it was wrong and that both his parents and his brother would have his
skin if things went wrong, yet he could not deny the little vixen.

Rowena smiled. She knew if she threatened to go without him, he would fear she
would go alone. It had worked. "I look forward to riding with my brother."
She
said
with a mischievious sparkle.

"okay, we leave at first dawn tomorrow, but we are taking bodyguards, young
lady."

Rowena grinned. "All right." She had what she wanted. Now she just had to get
what she needed to save her big brother.

"An Eavesdropped Secret"

King Hawk
Queen Arianna

Arianna slipped in and covered Hawk's eyes. "Guess who??" she said waiting
for him to reply. She had so much to tell him and would start with the
deception she heard in the hall. She thought that would find him in a better
mood than dealing with his brother.

Hawk felt like teasing her. "Let me think, is it Louise, Alanna or
Marianne... no I believe it's my wife." He pulled her into an embrace.
"Do you enjoy being home again?"

She welcomed the embrace. "You know, the intrigue never ceases to amaze me.
Just today not but a few moments ago, it seemed there is a plot to murder
one Raelin Morgance. It seemed the family in question wants her dead so
they can claim the land. The younger man, complained to the elder, a Baron
Pritchard...about a 'bungled assassination attempt and that they should have
just let him handle her.' I had to hold my tongue but I believe they are
causing trouble for lands of Morin and instead of letting Pritchard remain
Baron, I think you should give it all to Raelin...including his lands..."

She said to him...her eyes gleaming. "It seemed the Baron was trying to wipe
out the Morgance family by blood in more ways then one." she said to him.

"Do they now, and you are a witness to that, how convenient. those creeps
came to talk to me earlier today, I didn't like them much. I will talk to
Lady Raelin again tomorrow. What do you think, can we let them did their
graves a little bit further without endangering her, I would like to have a
little bit more proof."

"We just need to keep an eye out for the Lady's sake, but I do think they
have treaded on treacherous ground. That's not the real reason I came to
visit, besides to see you...I ran into your brother Brendan in the hallway.

He it seems has a fancy for one of the Lady's in the castle...but was here
to visit your mother."

"Brendan, in love? He is too immature for that. My brother can't even
handle the fact that I am King. Like it is something to enjoy. But no, he

has to be jealous of me, frankly he is a very annoying individual. I would
not wish him upon any decent woman."

"Hawk. I think you need to rethink that. Your brother seemed very mature
to me. You two are so alike that you two butt heads. I see it coming. You
both need to work out your disagreements. The woman in question you would
probably forbid him to see her as well...knowing you."she said quietly. She
didn't want him to get mad at her...but she just realized that both brothers
needed to grow up.

"For your information, I am not the one that started this silly feud. I
have tried to be reasonable with him my whole life, he didn't have to go,
he can still stay if he wants and prove that he can live as a responsible
adult. Believe me, he is the one making all the problems."

"As I can tell. I don't know what he has against you, but the two of you
need to talk. It might do the two of you both good if you set aside your
differences for once and talk. I have seen the look on his face when he
speaks of the lady he thinks of. It's the same look you give me." she said
to him.

"He's never had a serious relationship, he is a charmer. Look at it this
way, Brendan has no intention of staying here, so how can he have
honourable intentions with any lady at court?"

"If that is the case...then why is he still around? He knows that you are
here and yet he remains. It seems he's in turmoil for the first time in his
life whether to stay or to go." Arianna said. "And I have seen the look he
has in his eyes when he talks of this one lady. I know when I see someone
not just charming someone but someone actually in love, though he doesn't
admit it. I don't even think she knows either." She said to him.

Hawk sighed. "I don't mind if he stays. This is his home as well. And if he
truely is in love, I hope he finds happiness. The palace is big enough for
both of us and it will make my parents very happy."

She hugged him then and looked into his eyes. She didn't tell him it was
Diora that his brother was in love with though he'd find out soon enough.

"Aye I know that, you know that but he doesn't think so. I think you
both...being hard headed as your father...need to have a bit of a chat.
Even if its a knockout dragout fight...I am going to make sure you both have
peace between you...for my sake as well as your mother's."

He snorted. "Mother has been trying for years without any succes. Believe
me love, it's better for all to keep us apart. That is the one thing my
brother and I do agree on."

"And what of Diora?" she had slipped before she caught herself.

"Diora? What has Diora got to do with...." realisation dawned and with it
anger. "That little bastard, don't tell me he is preying on Diora, a
pregnant woman, how can he!"

"Dearest, I don't think he's preying on anyone. He was genuine infatuated
with her. His face lit up when he spoke of her. He knows she still grieves
as it seemed he has already spoken with your mother." she said calmly. "Now
do you see why I said speak with him. If what I think is true...your
brother may be seeing more of her."

"Brendan and Diora, I can't believe it. She is such a sensible young
woman." He shook his head. "I will talk to him."

"And maybe that's something he needs...your father gravitated towards a
strong woman...you married one, why not wish the same for your brother?" She
said quietly. "Though I don't know how Diora feels about the whole thing
yet."

"You are telling me that she might feel nothing for him?" Hawks face
brightened. "We should talk to her as soon as possible."

Somehow Arianna didn't think he would like the answer she would hear. Diora
seemed trapped in the middle of a mess of things and she didn't know how
much more the druid could take. "We should"

"Good, let's go."

With that, they headed off to speak with Diora.

"Before The King"
Kingdom Of Abertawe

Lord Alterian waited until the King and Queen were seated upon the dias that
now held two thrones. "His majesty calls before him, Sir Gwynne de Hawley."
The crowd fell silent at Alterian's loud bellow.

Sir Shannon La Falk had just snuck into the great hall as Alterian had made
his call. He jumped slightly and was thankful that it wasn't him being
summoned. He
had traveled a day and night with Davydd to get here on time and he was road
weary. He cursed the messenger who had stopped and not gotten the message to
him in a
timely manner. Thankfully he had had the chance to change into court
clothing in the stables before rushing here to the hall. He found an empty
seat, sat down, and pondered why he had been sent for. 'It figures I get my
first command and it lasts less than a week before I am called before the
King.'

Gwynne knew what this was about, he had discussed it with the King. He knew
that Alterian had been the one to ruin his wedding to Jolene, and he'd never
forgive him for that. But, Gwynne was a brave man. He stood up and walked to
the front. He wore a white tunic, over gold leggings, he looked well to do,
and his sword shimmered against the torchlight. He walked up to the dais,
and knelt, "I am at your service, your majesty."

"Lord Gwynne. For services to King and country we are creating you Baron
......" Hawk drew his sword. "Please swear loyalty to your king and
overlord."

"I, Gwynne Furlock Hawley, do hereby swear allegiance to King Gwalchmai of
Abertawe, and my overlord as is befitting. I pledge my loyalty, strength,
honor to the King's service as well as my overlord, and kneel here humbly
with respect and adoration for my King, Sallah!" Gwynne hid his joy at this
moment, looking austere and proud, but inside he had not been more thrilled
in his life. He had land and title again. He had spoken with the King
earlier, and knew that he would be the Baron of Cardigan, a nice piece of
land, which included the city of Caervent, where his new castle would be.

Gwynne now had a Barony, and the land he bought from Lady Morgan. He may
have lost Jolene, but he gained wealth and title afterward. Somehow, he knew
things were looking up in the love department too. For what father would not
now want his daughter to marry the Baron of Cardigan? Gwynne felt the King's
sword touch his shoulder's and he knew then, his life would never be the
same.

Hawk waited for the man to back away and then took a deep breath. Ian spoke
loudly to the court. "His Majesty calls forth Sir Shannon La Falk."

Shannon stood from his seat in the far back of the room and moved tentatively
to the isle and proceeded to the dias. Arriving there he knealt and while
bowing his head he spoke in a confident tone. "I am your humble servant your
Majesty." The tone in his voice did not match what he fealt.

"WE the King and Queen of Abertawe are aware of your service to the crown.
Therefore, It is our wish that you accept the device and the title of High
Knight of Earth." Hawk handed the man a tabard with the device of the High
Knight of Earth. "Will you take on this mantle and swear fealty to your King
and Queen?" Hawk said loudly.

Shannon continued to kneal, stunned. He had done no great feat of bravery, he
hadn't even seen that much of the battle against Sanglet. Finally he looked up
at the
King, and in a revered voice he replied. "Your Majesties, I Shannon La Falk
pledge all that I am to you and your service and to the service and protection
of Abertawe. " He gathered his voice, remembering the lessons in speaking that
he had received fom the monks for so many years. His voice contained the
heartfelt feelings of a man overwhealmed by the moment. "Your Highness I am
yours to command, where you lead I will follow, my heart, my life, my
voice, my
sword, is yours." He accepted the tabbard and bowed his head once more.

Hawk drew his sword and touched the man on both sides. Then said loudly, "Rise
Sir Shannon, Knight of Earth and join my court."

Shannon looked up and said "As you command your Highness." He stood tall and
erect, turned and walked confidently back to the back where he had been
seated.
His eyes scanned the back of the room for Davydd, fearing that the disfigured
creature had not heeded his warning and stayed in the stables with the horses.

"Quiet Talk"

Diora
Brendan ui Iowerth

Diora had awaken feeling better than she had in a long time. She didn't
know it but she felt like she could stand on her own two feet again and
figured that she'd try it. She sat up and placed her feet on the ground.
Her rounded belly was making a good appearance as the bedrest was helping
the children as she could no longer see her toes. She stood next to the bed
and sighed with a great smile. The weather was warm and beautiful and she
was ready to conquer the world...or at least her small part. She giggled
and moved to the window to look out. She wasn't going to cause a stir just
yet, for there was no need. She smiled and listened to the birds sing.

Brendan knocked Commodore and waited until she allowed him to enter.

She had her dressing gown on which only flattered her expanding figure
instead of hiding it. She figured she had no need to hide any longer. The
knock didn't come as a surprise. "Enter."

"Are you decent, my lady." He asked with a smile. He couldn't help
himself, she was so beautiful.

"Aye, as decent as I'm going to get." She said turning from the window. The
neckline of her dressing gown came down in a slight "V" shape showing her
neckline as her long hair had been pulled back in a pony tail at the nape of
her neck.

He was taken aback. "You look so smashing." Now he fumbled a little. "My

brother came back today."

She was about to reply her thanks when she saw the fumble. "Which means
your leaving?" she asked crestfallen.

"I came to discuss that. My intervention was only to stay for a few days

to meet my parents, then I met you. And now I don't know what to do." He
admitted truthfully.

She sighed and walked over to him. "I know you don't like staying in the
castle and that makes it worse as you don't get along wtih your brother. I
can plead my case but I doubt it'll do any good." She looked then to the
floor. "I'd like you to stay." she said quietly.

"Do you mean that?" He didn't know where to look. "Are you sure, do you
really mean it?"

"Aye, I do...I mean that...I'd really like you to stay." she said looking at
him now.

He came closer and took her in his arms. "if you are sure, I am the misfit
of the family. But I would like to be here for you, we can find a place
together, ignore my brother. I mean I will ignore my brother, you work for
him."

"I am sure. " she said. She felt safe in his arms. "Misfit, I think not.
Maybe misunderstood." she said smiling to him. "I think you and Hawk will
come to terms. It will be something tragic that brings you two together."
She said knowing the dream that came to her the night before. She was the
goddess' pawn in this family. She knew that was the reason why she was
brought here and her foresight never was wrong.

"My love." He said softly. "My love." Somehow it sounded good. "Do you
have parents, maybe I should have a word with them." Again a shy smile.

This felt where she belonged and it seemed the other man in Rowena's sight
was Brendan. "Nae, neither of them live any longer and I hate to say it,
your brother seems responsible for my care...so anyone you should have a
word with is him and I know you don't want to do that." she sighed holding
him now as well.

He tensed when she mentioned his brother's name. "That might be a problem.
We might have to elope, my love."

"Timing isn't right...be patient. Things are to happen. I don't know what
yet...but they are going to happen and soon." She said to him quietly.

"That sounds mysterious." Brendan said. "Are you psychic or something?"
He inquired.

"Or something." she said with a smile. "I have these dreams that are never
wrong and I had one last eve. It ties us all together and I don't know when
it'll happen but it will."

"Can you tell me about it." He said gently. "I will do anything to
protect you, I want you to know that."

She smiled and nodded. She didn't know what she felt towards him but it
wasn't animosity nor was it something that she could really express. "All I
can say is it depends on you and your brother. I'm caught somehow in the
middle.

"That's not what I want." He said seriously. "Tell me what I can do to
make things easier for you."

"I don't know...this is all happening so fast. I think Hawk isn't taking
you seriously and he needs to. You need to settle your differences because
if I am to be in both of your lives I cannot be pulled apart because of a
feud that you two have." she said to him quietly. "I think that's what the
dream was telling me."

"I will try." He said. Only for her he would, his mother had asked him
many times and he had never done it. "Yet for her."

She smiled and kissed his cheek. It was the closest thing she felt
compelled to do. She had feelings but she didn't know how far they would go
and she was not sure of trusting herself with anyone yet. "Tis all I ask."

"I will speak to my brother." he promised.

"Overwhelming"

Diora di' Annagar
Mathius ap Cornellius

As per his promise to his old friend, Mathius made his way to Diora's room to see how she faired this day. He felt for her having to be couped up in the room day in and day out, but he also understood she needed to get healthy for her sake and that of her twins. Having some friendly flowers in hand, Mathius lighlty rapped on her door. "Di, it's Mathius," he said and waited for her to reply.

She had a bright smile on her face. "Come on in Matti."
Mathius walked in and immidiately knew something was up by the smile on her face. it was unnatural for the surrounding conditions. Seeing that no one els was in the room, Mathius turned and closed the door. Then rounded back towards Di, "And what, by the gods, has you smiling so, Missy." Mathius asked in a playfully adultlike tone. She definitely had his curiosity peaked.

"Let you in on a little secret. I snuck out of my room. I got caught, but was allowed! to stay out most of the afternoon. It was glorious." She said with a child like grin on her face.

Mathius chuckled figuring something as much. He wished it could have been him lending aid to her escape, but he needed to keep himself clean of mischief until he had earned the trust from those important int he courts. "Who, pray tell, would have allowed you to stay out knowing your condition and the kings demands for your rest and recuperation." Mathius continued to smile as he asked inquisitively and not out of anger.

"The king's brother." she said plainly to him. She scooted out of bed...her growing belly set her a little off balance as she stood, but she walked up to him and took the flowers from him. She didn't give him a chance to meet her at the bed. "These smell of the summer...they smell wonderful".

A part of him felt jealous over the idea of her spending time with another man, but they were not a couple giving Mathius no! rights to her. Mathius had struggled with relationships his entire life never being able to commit. Di had been the one exception to that rule. Mathius had commited to her, but on a friendship level. He knew even back then as a child that marriage and relationships horrified him. He saved himself the heartache of losing another good woman to his own inner turmoil. Mathius would be faithful to diora for life by not allowing himself to get involved with her. He didn't wish to lose her.

"Di, that is wonderful," Mathius said clearing his throat a bit and coming back to his senses as he handed over the flowers that were for her. "How serious is this? Was it but a fancy or do you inspire to meet him again?" Mathius asked returning to his playful self. If this man was to make her happy then that was what he wanted for her.

Then it struck him. The king's brother. "Di, are you sure you want to get involved in such an affair? After all, Hawk and Brendan do not see eye! to eye ... ever." Mathius had doen his homework on Abertawe before he ever moved here and knew, quite well, of the knight's and king's relationship. In actuality, most everyone of the courts knew. The last thing he wanted to see was Di stuck in the middle of sibling rivalry.

"I don't know what to think, really..." she wavered a bit as she saw that look in his eye and recognized it. She knew even though he was her friend that he did indeed love her. He had told her so in the bower of an apple tree when they were 12 years old. She was torn and still grieving. She already felt like she was stuck in the middle of the king's family just by being the healer. She sighed and turned away not feeling so giddy anymore and the despair and loneliness setting in once again. She didn't hide it as she always did around others, she couldn't hide from Matti. He knew her too well. She was still fighting with the turmoil inside herself an! d felt like she would shatter into many pieces.

Mathius could now see it. She held feelings for the knight amidst doubt and fear. Whenever she hurt, Mathius hurt. he did not like to see her like this. When they were young, he always went out of his way to keep her smiling so that joy could lift over the pain she held. As long as he could remember, di held some sort of pain. Mathius had wondered if it was part of the legacy of a healer to accompany their gift. Reaching out to her, Mathius held his arms out to her for comfort as a friend.

"Dear Di, I must ask you, since you are wise as a druid and a healer, would you encourage such activity to a woman who would come to you for help given the same situation you are in? You are still grieving the loss of your husband and now dealing with a courtship by a man not respected by the king you work for because they are siblings. Two men fight over you. are you mentally ready for it?" Mathius was refering to Hawk and Br! endan but deep inside he knew he was part of the fight. Mathius also knew that if it came to Brendan and Him, that the knight would win. Mathius knew his flaws and felt he could never give Diora everything she deserved.

She couldn't answer and just cried in his arms. "Why does this have to be so hard?" was all she could ask.

Mathius did not reply. He could tell it was a retorical question not needing a response. Instead, he did the one thing that he knew he could do, he held her close to give her comfort and allowed her to cry until her body could cry no more. This was a time for her to be sad given the circumstances. When she was ready, she would talk again, and Mathius would comfort her with conversation.

"I'm a pawn in a political game it seems." she whispered to him. "All I ever wanted was to be loved by another and not have to contest or share part of me with another...I'm being pulled in many directions at once and I need to breathe.! " She stated.

"Then do just that, Di. Pack your stuff and head to another abby for a short time. Your are a priestess, so commune with the Goddess. Come back when you are ready to give answers to those who might have questions. I promise that if people have true heart for you, they will wait for you and not force an answer upon you or use you in ways you do not seem fit." Mathius knew he was one who would wait. Her friendship alone meant that much to him.

"I want to leave so badly, but Hawk, he'll just have me bodyguarded and looked after..." She said as she started to ramble. She knew she had to leave and leave on her own with no bodyguards or protectors. She sighed and looked at him. She would have to decide on something soon.

Mathius didn't like the situation. If he aided, he could get in serious trouble from his king. Yet if he sat by and watched idol, he would have to bear watching Diora's pain get worse. In the end, he knew his! friendship mattered most.

"Di, I have a place you could go and stay for a while that would be safe. I could take you there and come back to get you when you are ready to return. It is my father's house, The Cornellius Estates in Caerwent. My mother's name is Clara and she would help i'm positive. If Hawk found out, he would feel safe in knowing that Cornellius was one of his father's trusted Captains." Mathius looked on with care for Di but inside he was struggling with facing his parents after five years for Mathius never returned home after he found out about his blood father.

She could see that it bothered him when he spoke of home. "I don't want to impose. I think, if I can just get to the Tor again...maybe I'll find Fagan and hide out with him for a little while. He'll be furious with me, I know it." She really didn't want to impose on him.

Mathius gave a reassuring smile, "Di, you do not impose on me. I think I impose on! myself. I left home when mom told me of Angus Sanglet. I was angry and vengeful. I never went back feeling it turned my life upside down. In reality, I have told anyone and everyone that Cornellius is my TRUE father for his love he gave me even though he knew the truth. It would make my parents happy to see me come home, and my mother is an excellent cook. Nothing would be required of you save to relax. It would be better on you if it was at least known where you are and with good company. Hawk does not have high regard for Fagan right now after all that has happened with the Princess.

In truth, the choice is yours, though, and I will take you wherever you feel best." Mathius only wanted her to get well and in a place that would allow her time to think. He would handle whatever concequences arose based on her decision.

She smiled and kissed his cheek. She then blushed furiously for her action. "Thank you, you've been so kind. Fagan is my father, ! my real father and there is much I need to speak to him about. I take solace in the trees, you know that, though I wouldn't mind meeting your mother..." she said whistfully. She wanted to take him up on his offer but she didn't know what to do and in the end any action she did decide on would be a rash one at that.

Mathius could see the contemplation in her face, "Why don't you sleep on it. I don't want you doing something you might regret later. If you still wish to go, then pack your belongings. When I return in the morning, we will leave to where ever you decide will be best. I can certainly understand if you wish to be with your father for awhile." The last thing Mathius wanted was for di to feel that he persuaded her into a course of action.

She nodded and didn't reply so much. He was reaching out to her when she needed someone and she was afraid. Afraid that she would get hurt again. She had always loved him and she knew it! but she was afraid to show it. "I'll let you know one way or the other." she said quietly.

The feeling was a bit heavy for Mathius. He loved her as a friend but feared to love her in any other way. He was terrible at love and wanted not to hurt her himself. His aid was as a trusted friend and that was how it had to be for now ... maybe forever. "I will return on the morrow and do whatever you decide." Mathius kissed her forehead and left the room closing the door behind him. Something had occured in there, and Mathius was nervous both happy and afraid.

"Questions"
By
His Royal Majesty, King Gwalchmai ap Iorwerth
and
Lady Raelin Morgance,
Lady of Morin
***
The day after the Knight of Wind had left her family house, she found
herself summoned to the king.

She had dressed carefully, making sure her clothing was neat and proper.
On her arrival at the Caer she walked alone down the hall to wait for the
King to summon her further. She informed a servant of her arrival and stood
silently waiting.

allied to later became came to collect her himself. "My Lady Raelin." he
said with a gentle smile. "Please step into my private office, I have some
more questions to ask of you if you have the time."

"of course sire." Raelin said softly. She had a bad feeling about the entire
situtation. She allowed him to lead her into his private office silently.

"please sit down, my lady. I hope you haven't been uncomfortable waiting
here. I had a little chat with your stepfamily yesterday. They said some
rather bad things about you." He told her about the accusations and the
witnesses they said they could produce. "I would like to hear your side of

the story."

She looked at him saddly. "My side to the story? Against people who hate me
and will do anything to see me die? Of Course Sire, where would you like me

to start? When my stepmother started rumours of witchcraft about me so I

would be killed and she could force my father to name her family heirs
incase of no male heir? When they told my father after my stepmother had

commited suicide that I should be locked up because my 'evil eye ' obviously
caused her death?" She paused. "I have never done anything wrong, except be
born female. And last I checked that was not a crime."

"Calm down, lass." Hawk said. "I am not out to get you. So don't get rude
with me. I just need to know if you can disprove their rumours should it
be necessary." He smiled at her. "Between you and me, I didn't like you
step family very much."

She lowered her head. "I am sorry Sir. But I know of nothing that can change
their rumours. I have no one other then my servants who could vouch for me,
and even then it could be seen as biased. I did not come here expecting to
find them following me to corrupt people against me."

"some of the villagers maybe, the people living around the castle have
known you all their lives." The King suggested.

Raelin grew pale at the mention of the villiagers. "The people of the caer
where i grew up, would probably be defenders of me, but the villiagers
believe the rumours and they did not accept my stepmother's confession of
starting the rumour Sire." She did not look at him as she was fighting for
composure. She wanted to ring Harrison Pritchard's neck.

"you are saying they have been frightened?" He went on gently. "It
doesn't make matters easier, my lady, that you have so few people to speak
out for you. Your stepfamily did their work well."

Raelin nodded "Yes Sire. They have indeed worked well to make sure I have no
supporters... AS they have done for many years."

"my dear lady, he will find the people here more open-minded. My healer is
also a Druid, and a lot of people here still believe in the old gods,
including me. So whatever happens we can make a home for you here." he
said. He liked this young lady and he hoped that things would work out for
her, she had had too much grief in her life already.

Raelin gave him a shy half smile. "I.. just need you to know Sire, I am not
a witch, I have never done anything like that in my life."

"my dear, witchcraft doesn't scare me. I'm sure that my healer would be
regarded as a witch by your villagers. Be what you are." He said
cryptically.

She gave a small nod. "yes Sire." She paused. "What other.. charges have
they brought forth against me if i may enquire?"

"nothing much, my dear. They only said you were a criminal, mentally
unstable and involved in murdering your stepmother, that's all." He smiled
at her.

She gave another small nod. ~Thats all, he says. Its enough to have me
locked up, bu thats all.~ She wondered what else that was going to be said
about her. "IS there anything else I should know about Sire?"

"not that I can think of. Just remember that in the end of the affection
of the King weighs heavily in this decision. So try not to worry too much."

Raelin nodded. And then she stood. "Thank you Sire for your paitence in this
matter and for your wise words. I just hope it all comes out correctly."

"you will see it will." The King said and then gave her leave to go. He
watched her walk out of his study, hoping things would work out for this
young woman.
