Background: Edmund of Aragon hails from the extensive nation of Plas Gorerddan on the isle of Cei Newydd. He was born to a woman of low standing, though she was uncommonly beautiful as well as educated. Her name was Chloe, from the small village of Aragon where Edmund was born. Edmund never knew his father and was raised to believe that he was killed in some great battle just a few months before Chloe gave birth to her only child. Edmund was also too young to remember Aragon before he left the village with his mother. Chloe served as a tutor for the children of noble families within the Caer Lyon, which was headed by the high family of the Duke of Lyon, whom was the cousin of the King of Plas Gorerddan. As an excellent tutor, Chloe was given many leniencies when it came to her place at the caer.
Her pay was low, but she saved every spare penny for her son and saw to it that he was educated just as well as the children of noble birth, and taught him in courtly behavior as well. When Edmund was still very young, the Duke of Lyon gave Chloe a proposal. He told her that so long as she remained at the caer as tutor, he would take Edmund in as a page, and later as a squire. The opportunity would give Edmund the chance to become a knight and change his future, but the opportunity came with another price to Chloe. The Duke of Lyon was a cold man of low moral values and told her that she was to remain at the caer as his mistress as well.
Chloe had loved Edmund's father and was a devout follower of the One God, but Edmund was all she had left and he was everything to her. Wanting the best for her child, she accepted the Duke's sinful offer and did her best to hide it from her son. Edmund was elated to find out that he would be accepted as a page. Since hearing tales from his mother about his father and what a great soldier he was, he had wanted nothing more than to follow in his footsteps and become a soldier as well.
He trained hard and soaked up whatever knowledge he was given, especially with strategic studies. Edmund was also taunted and bullied much of the time because the other boys knew he was not of noble birth. This only strengthened his resolve to become the best knight he could be. He trained harder and trained long passed when the other boys were done for the day. The Duke also made it harder for him and when Edmund would beat the other boys in any particular event, especially the Duke's son, it would usually result in a beating for Edmund, but the boy knew that if his mother knew of these occurrences she would take him away and he would not have his chance to become a knight, so he kept it to himself.
He became a squire at the young age of twelve. It wasn't until he was sixteen that he began to learn of his mother's promise to the Duke and what she sacrificed just so he could squire under one of the best knights in Cei Newydd. It was when the other squires began to taunt him of his mother's 'duties' to the Duke that he began to grow suspicious. When he finally confronted his mother about it, she broke down into tears and started to beg for his forgiveness as well as God's forgiveness. It was then that he knew the rumors were true.
What followed remains a secret between Edmund and his mother. Chloe could not stop her son from tracking down the Duke, hatred running through his veins. When he found the Duke, a swordfight ensued which resulted in the death of the Duke. It was witnessed by Chloe, even though she tried to stop her son. No one ever discovered who had killed the Duke.
Afterward, Edmund sent his mother away to Dinas Dwr, hoping she would be able to find a peace she had not known in many years. He remained at Caer Lyon and was taken under the wing of another knight, whom was the first to show him any kind of real kindness, but two years later, when Edmund was eighteen, the knight was killed in battle. Before his death, he knighted Edmund. It was a moment the young man had waited all his life for, but when it came, he found that he was not proud, as he had no one to share the moment with.
He served as a low knight in Plas Gorerddan for five years. His skill was distinctive, as he soon became a champion of tournaments and battles alike. The King soon made him a high knight and gave him the position of Master of the Royal Legion of Plas Gorerddan. The Royal Legion was a large and expertly trained cavalry force. He proved himself an excellent leader and knight. He served in this capacity for three years, but then received word that his mother was ailing and urgently needed to see her son.
Edmund respectfully stepped down from his position as Master of the Royal Legion and traveled as quickly as he could to Dinas Dwr. He arrived too late. Chloe had already passed on, but she left behind two letters and a token. One letter was to Edmund and the other was to a man by the name of Lord Iowerth. In the letter to her son, Chloe confessed all of her lies to her son and again begged his forgiveness. She revealed that Edmund's father had not died in a battle that she knew of, and was still alive in the Kingdom of Abertawe. She revealed Edmund's father's name to be Lord Iowerth ap Greidawl, General of the Army of Abertawe. She further explained her brief but passionate love affair with Lord Iowerth and how dejected she had felt when he left and never returned.
The news was all startling to the devastated knight. The token Chloe left for Edmund was an ancestral ring of the family of Greidawl, which Iowerth had given to Chloe. In her letter she went on to tell her son to claim his place within the royal family of Abertawe and to meet his true father and given him the letter she wrote to him. Edmund did not read his mother's letter to Iowerth, but carried it with him as he traveled Dinas Dwr aimlessly for several months. He finally decided to go to Abertawe, for his mother's sake.
