Background:
Born as the youngest son of a smith in Aberystwyth, he had a family, but no rights or money. He learned a trade, to make blades for his father, especially daggers. His father was a worthless drunk, who repeatedly beat his children and his wife. After a heavy assault on his wife, when Cyrus was around 10, she left him for good, and went into hiding.

Cyrus was forced to endure the many drunken ramblings and random violence of his father, and it was only his skill of making fine daggers that brought food on the table. Then one day, when Cyrus was 12 years old, he watched the drunken father beat up a woman that could not pay for the kettle she wanted repaired, and refused to pain with her body. To stop his assaults, he ran into his father and flailed with his arms, separating the two. The woman ran out of the shop, screaming for the guards, while his father stumbled on a poker, and fell into the forge.

The woman returned with a guard, and they were greeted with a boy that watched his father's body being consumed by the fire he had built up his life around. The boy was curiously calm. The smithy was taken away from him, and he was thrown into a orphanage, where he escaped at the earliest possible moment to live on the street.

He found that he was able to slip into the shadows with ease, and watch what was going on. He lived off his skills to slit purses, and often preyed upon ladies that went slumming, and brought their heavy purses, laden with gold. As he grew up, he learned to make robberies, and second story thefts. That brought him enough funds to leave his home town, and head to the capitol.

There he bought himself a small smithy, and tried to live of the work he produced. It was there that he made the daggers Sting and Fang. He had become quite good, but then his skills attracted the anger of a nearby smith, who was jealous of his work. He had a band of ruffians assault Cyrus, and burn down his shop, stealing anything of value, except the two daggers, and left him to die in the gutter.

He was found by a man who pitied the man that was obviously a victim of bandits, and brought to his home. He had his servants nurse him back to life, and offered to adopt the young man. Cyrus had never had a name, only Cyrus Smith, and now saw a way to move up in the world, to better deal with his enemies. So he agreed. Now he became Cyrus Mortimore. His adopted father's name was Selwyn, and Cyrus grew to like him with time.

The Lord was without an heir, and he was an old man. At around the 15th birthday, the father was overrun by a carriage in the streets, giving him wounds that never let him recover. He died, letting the boy inherit the whole fortune and title. Cyrus took the middle name Selwyn in his honour. The story could have ended happily here, but fate had yet another twist for him.

The scribe that his father had used for so long, had embezzled the entire fortune, so Cyrus was titled, but once again put on the street. Then he recognised the carriage that killed his father, and he began to follow it. He found the owner, a rich nobleman with a fat, obscene woman and a sullen boy. He decided that fate had turned him into what he was, and now it had come to an end.

One night, he slipped into the house, using his old second story skills, and one by one, murdered the offenders in their sleep. None of them ever woke up to know their lives were at an end. He moved through their house like a shadow of revenge, and left it behind after filling his pockets with the riches he could carry, not even bothered at having murdered the family.

This whetted his appetite, and soon, one by one of his antagonists found themselves dead in the morning. He felt no remorse, and instead he used the money to build up his own wealth. He became a self-made man, with a title and modest wealth. He used his title to enter society, and to learn from observing.

Soon he found a woman that moved through the salons, like she owned them. An angel so beauty he found himself choking with emotion he never though he had within him. She was a poor Princess, and was about to be married to an imbecile, a fool and a rich fop of a count. Fearing that she would be ruined by him or his lecherous friends, he decided to rescue her.

He sought a position within his household, and quietly weaned out his competition, so that he became the trusted advisor. Here he used his power to observe, and persuasion to protect her from the dangerous society she was captured in. One of his greatest feats was to persuade the Count not to go through with the mating, but to leave her a virgin. Instead he procured mistresses for the count, and through them, learned more of his master and his business.
